Jakarta’s Menteng Atas Facility Turns 32 Tons of Waste Daily into Alternative Fuel

In a major push for sustainable waste management, the Menteng Atas Waste Treatment Site (TPS 3R) in South Jakarta has successfully processed 32 tons of daily waste into Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF).

We can generate a 20 to 30 percent yield of RDF

By transforming trash into alternative fuel, the facility serves as a key solution for the Jakarta government to minimize the flow of residual waste to the Bantar Gebang landfill.

The processing cycle at the facility takes 7 hours and 19 minutes each day, with RDF output reaching 20% to 30% of the daily intake, according to Kamil Salim from the Waste and Hazardous Waste (B3) Management Section.

"We handle 32 tons of waste daily. From that amount, we can generate a 20 to 30 percent yield of RDF, though this is highly dependent on the quality and how well the waste has been pre-sorted," he explained, Saturday (7/11).

He explained that the volume of RDF production is heavily determined by the composition and quality of the incoming waste. Hence, waste segregation at the source is a critical factor in enhancing processing effectiveness and ensuring higher-quality RDF.

"Processing waste at the regional level is a strategic shift. It moves us away from the traditional collect-and-dump model toward a system where waste is utilized as a renewable energy source, while simultaneously reducing the strain on the Bantargebang landfill," he continued.

He added that operations at the Menteng Atas 3R Waste Treatment Facility are supported by 10 personnel responsible for every stage, from waste reception and sorting to processing.

The facility utilizes the La MACCA machine, developed by PT Mario Mikron Metalindo. During the current trial phase, machine operations are supported by personnel from PT Mitra Kurnia Indah (MKI) as the waste management service provider.

"Technicians from PT Mario Mikron Metalindo also provide on-site guidance to ensure the entire process runs safely, optimally, and in accordance with technical procedures," he added.

Meanwhile, PT Mario Mikron Metalindo President Director, Jusman Sikki added that the technology is a homegrown innovation specifically designed to effectively process both organic and inorganic waste into alternative fuel.

So, he hoped that this technology would be widely adopted by regional governments as a sustainable waste management solution that also transforms waste into a valuable energy source with tangible economic benefits.

"Also hope it can be used more extensively by local governments. By so, waste can be repurposed into an alternative energy source that offers both utility and economic value," he concluded.
